Hooked on Plastic

Presented by Carp TV’s Joe Morgan, this DVD is essential viewing for anyone who uses or is thinking of using imitation or plastic baits as they are commonly referred to. The first section filmed at Fryerning Fisheries, Essex, is packed with useful tips and tactics and shows how Joe and top carp angler Frank Warwick use plastic baits in their own carp fishing. Topics covered include the mag-aligner rig, imitation corn, zig rigs and surface baits, flavours, rigs that work, glow in the dark hookbaits, imitation pellets/boilies, bait cages and other odds and ends.

The second part filmed at Carthagena Fisheries

on the River Lea at Broxbourne shows how top

all round specialist angler

Ian Welch uses plastic maggots and pellets to

target river species.

The final section featuring Korda’s Danny

Fairbrass shows some of the rigs and baits that

both he and the Korda team have used with

devastating results.

advice and tips to improve your results, plus it

features the full 2010 range of the latest

Israeli Carp Comp

A bit late we know but news has just reached us of an event that took place back in December. The Israeli Open Carp Fishing Championship 2009 took place over five days 20th Dec - 25th Dec and the eventual winners were Sorokov Arkady and Zaidiner Alexandr of team Royal Carp with 36 carp for 298lb 12oz.

Interesting though this was, what

really caught our eye was the photos

of the teams lined up with firearms

over their shoulders!

A very common sight at some of my local lakes .

A marsh harrier soaring over reedbeds looking for its next meal

Sometimes I don’t think we really appreciate quite how lucky we are! I’m not talking about on a global scale - for sure we are in an incredibly privileged position here in the UK. However, I’m talking about on a more local level and lucky in terms of being able to spend so much time in the great outdoors, either individually or socially. I’m sure you, like me, have on many occasions heard an unusual shriek and upon looking up have seen the distinctive electric blue flash of a kingfisher flying past. This for us may be a very common sight, but for the general public it’s something many of them will never see. Last year I saw a program where Bill Oddie had set up a hide near some remote stream and had to wait ages until a kingfisher eventually came to rest on a well-placed branch right in front of the hide. Now what is it that we do almost every time we go fishing - tuck ourselves away in a hide and place two or three excellent perches right over the lake’s edge. Our little hides and general lack of activity also allow us to get seriously close to many other creatures.
Last week I visited the RSPB reserve at Blacktoft Sands, North Lincs, with my son. We were given a species sheet to fill in during our stay and I was immediately surprised that a few of the species I expected to see were not listed. I was told by one of the wardens this was because they were very rare. He went on to explain just how few bitterns there were in my local area, in fact just three individual birds! It was only then that I realised just how lucky I’ve been in recent
years, having had many encounters with biterns, and on one occasion seeing three individual birds within five minutes of one another! When I also explained what other species I’d encountered he looked somewhat envious of our laid back pursuit.
Some of the best memories I have of being on the bank are these chance encounters with unusual and exciting species. I’ll never forget walking around a local pit eating a bag of chips just half-an-hour after a heavy summer shower. I passed over a little bridge over the outflow wearing just some shorts and a t-shirt and there right before me nosing around in the long grass was a rather wet looking badger. I watched it sniffing around for a few minutes before leaving it to go and hopefully sniff out some carp for myself.
For all that our sport offers, it is these chance sightings and close encounters with other wildlife that really makes spending days by the lake so special for me. And to think whilst you and I are out enjoying our pursuit, just up the road and around the country millions of people are settling down to watch the latest instalment of their favourite soap opera - lets just hope they don’t realise what they’re missing out on!

The Keeper auctioned

Freebird Publishing has announced that the No. 1 leatherbound copy of The Keeper will be auctioned next week on eBay. Keith Jenkins told Carp-Talk: “Freebird has been proud to raffle the No. 1 leatherbound copies of Light My Fire and Cassien…and Beyond over the past year, with all of the profits going to Stoney and Friends. With The

Keeper we’ve decided to auction the No. 1

leatherbound on eBay. The auction will start next

Friday, 26th February, and will end just prior to the

Five Lakes show, so that we can hand over the

proceeds to Alan Stone at the show. If you fancy

the No. 1 of only 50 leatherbound copies keep an

eye out on eBay. It will be signed by both the

author and Sue Lane, the artist and illustrator,

making it even more collectable.”
